Hackers Breach guardian.co.uk Jobs Portal

UK news website guardian.co.uk reported on Sunday that its jobs portal, jobs.guardian.co.uk, was the victim of a “sophisticated and deliberate hack” on the night of Friday 23 October.

guardian.co.uk contacted or attempted to contact those who may have been affected, which it estimates to be up to half a million users. A spokesperson said “the hack was stopped before it was completed”.

“As soon as we were alerted to the fact that there was a problem, we dealt with it, in line with the information commissioner’s guidance on data protection,” the spokesperson said. “We felt it was important to be transparent and alert our users as soon as possible.”

A security notice was posted to the portal on Sunday 25 October saying the website was now secure, and a subsequent notice stated that more information about the crime will be released towards the end of this week.

guardian.co.uk states that user accounts were not hacked and that there is no need for users to change their passwords. Data that could have been affected includes names, email addresses, cover letters and CVs, however the email to users said there was no reason to believe any financial or bank data had been compromised. The US version of the website, guardianjobs.com, was not affected.

techherald.com quotes Yuval Ben Itzhak, chief technology officer at security software company Finjan, as saying the attack on jobs.guardian.co.uk is not unusual:

“Although top websites have been – and continue to be – targeted by cybercriminals, those sites that store identity information will continue to a primary target, especially now that criminal hackers are being affected by the economic situation we all find ourselves in.”

“Usually, cybercriminals are using this type of stolen data to create fake identities, as well as generating spam plus Phishing attacks, as well as many other scams. Auctioning stolen identity information is another technique that our researchers have spotted. It’s also worth noting that Guardian portal is not alone in being attacked by cybercriminals, as other US job sites have also been hit using this hacker methodology.”
