May Boost in Aussie Jobs

June 14, 2010 by Alice Allan

Online job opportunities are up according to May figures from Australian market leading portal seek.com.au and the ANZ bank.

seek.com.au’s index shows the number of new job ads placed on the portal increased by 1.6 percent in May, however there was a slight decline in job availability in Western Australia.

“Given WA’s very strong growth since June 2009 the pause seen here is an area worth monitoring, particularly over the next few months to assess if in fact miners are pulling back on recruitment due to the proposed resources tax,” said seek.com.au managing director Joe Powell.

“But overall it’s continued good news for job seekers and employers alike in May, with the job market now having shown a positive direction for nearly a year.”

ANZ has the number of online job advertisements up by 5 percent in May, which is the fastest annual rate of growth since April 2008.

The company says Internet job advertisements are now 22.3 percent higher than they were a year ago. But while the number of online jobs rose, the number of newspaper job advertisements fell by 6.8 percent.

“Despite the strong rise in total job advertising, the slowdown in newspaper job advertising growth does imply some impending moderation in Australia’s recent strong employment growth,” said ANZ senior economist Katie Dean.
