Facebook Change for simplyhired.com

April 23, 2010 by Alice Allan

US-based job search engine simplyhired.com has announced a new integration with Facebook Connect just as the social networking feature is undergoing major changes.

According to mashable.com, Facebook is set to “kill” Facebook Connect after the launch of its new Open Graph protocol. However a simplyhired.com blog post, published the same day Facebook made its announcements, says the job search engine is now rolling out a Facebook Connect integration.

Facebook’s developer blog explains that Open Graph will turn web pages into objects Facebook users can add to their profiles. The post explains:

“When a user establishes this connection by clicking Like on one of your Open Graph-enabled pages, you gain the lasting capabilities of Facebook Pages: a link from the user’s profile, ability to publish to the user’s News Feed, inclusion in search on Facebook, and analytics through our revamped Insights product.”

zdnetasia.com’s quotes from Facebook’s f8 conference throw more light on the issue of Open Graph versus Facebook Connect.

“We are actually eliminating the Facebook Connect brand,” the website quotes Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as saying. “We figured that ‘Connect’ is not descriptive for users.”

“Facebook Connect was just an initiative to have [the] Facebook log-in work on external websites, but the underlying framework is the same,” Facebook director of platform product, Bret Taylor added. “Making that [Connect] distinction was actually causing some developer confusion.”

mashable.com says it’s not clear at this stage how Facebook will replace Facebook Connect or if it will go by a new name.

If the change to Facebook Connect is going to affect simplyhired.com’s plans, the search engine is giving no hint of it at this stage. Its homepage is currently inviting users to log in to Facebook to “See where your friends work. Find jobs at your friends’ companies.”
