DOL Challenge Winners Announced

February 8, 2010 by Alice Allan

The winners of the US Department of Labor’s “Tools for America’s Job Seekers Challenge” have been announced.

The competition, which attracted some criticism from those in the industry, chose the top-rated sites in each of six categories: general job boards, niche tools, career tools, career exploration tools, web 2.0 and “other”.

The Department of Labor says it collected 16,000 votes from the public over a two-week period. 10 general job boards were chosen, including market leaders careerbuilder.com and monster.com, and search engines indeed.com and simplyhired.com. The niche job board winners were divided into seven categories.

The social media winners included LinkedIn and tweetmyjobs.com. tweetmyjobs.com founder Gary Zukowski was initially critical of the competition, pointing out flaws in the voting process to walletpop.com. vetjobs.com president Ted Daywalt also reported problems with the voting process, however vetjobs.com was included amongst the niche job boards for military, state, and government workers.

In its statement regarding the competition, The Department of Labor maintained that the votes were screened for invalid entries before the winners were announced.

Those who provide online tools for job seekers but missed out on participating in the competition can still submit their offering to the Department for consideration.
