Interview with Gary Zukowski – tweetmyjobs.com

The rise of social media has created a swathe of jobs-related services aiming to take advantage of the social web. tweetmyjobs.com is one such offering – a Twitter-based job posting service that allows users to subscribe to Twitter “channels” and receive text messages on their mobile as soon as positions become available.

In May 2009, the company partnered with global jobs posting website equest.com. Next it released its branded tweet service, TweetMark, and teamed up with the Direct Employers Association.

After a busy year, tweetmyjobs.com founder Gary Zukowski spoke to jobsportalwatch.com about the aim of the service, its future plans, and its place in the online recruiting landscape:

What exactly is tweetmyjobs.com and how does it work?

tweetmyjobs.com is the only global Twitter-based recruiting solution in the world. We manage over 6,300 vertical job channels on Twitter, which allows us to effectively channel job postings directly to interested job seekers instantly.

Companies use our service to distribute ALL their job openings to Twitter in a fast and efficient manner. We also manage and protect a company’s brand on Twitter.

How does tweetmyjobs.com create revenue?

The service is free for jobseekers. We charge companies for posting and tweeting jobs, and have signed up many Fortune 1000 companies who believe in our model to use our service.

You recently launched a social media based campaign to promote tweetmyjobs.com. Can you tell us about the response you’ve had?

The campaign was a lot of fun to create and launch. We created a somewhat slapstick video demonstrating the effectiveness of tweetmyjobs.com, and figured that since we’re in the social media space, why not promote it via social media channels.

During the campaign, we’ve seen more than 500 tweets/posts per day about the video, and it has gotten a lot of buzz in the media. I think this approach is going to become more popular as social media grows.

CareerBuilder CEO Matt Ferguson recently told ere.net that he sees social media as the biggest challenge to the dominance of larger job portals. How do you see social networks changing the online recruitment landscape?

Tremendously. Social media is changing everything. It’s changing the way we function professionally, personally, and the way we communicate. Social media is weaving its way into every aspect of society.

Just like the Internet allowed smaller companies to compete with larger companies during the dot com boom in the 90’s, social media is allowing the small company to promote their brand for a relatively low entry price. When it comes to job portals, there’s no longer the need to go to a board to get your career advice or new job openings.

The jobs come to the jobseeker (both passive and active), via social media, because that’s where people are spending their time online. Larger job portals that do not figure out how to integrate social media channels into their offerings will probably lose considerable market share.

What has been the biggest challenge for tweetmyjobs.com in 2009?

Building our brand. We’ve formed some very strategic partnerships with companies such as Direct Employers as well as many recruitment ad agencies to help promote our service. We expect to continue with this strategy.

What can we expect to see from tweetmyjobs.com over the next 12 months?

A lot. We have a lot of plans on the table for 2010, including a site redesign, expanding our base on Twitter, and developing more tools for both the employer and jobseeker. Our goal is to continue to be a pioneer and leader in this space.
