Monster Index Up in Europe
December 11, 2009 by Alice Allan
Monster Worldwide has released its Employment Index for Europe, reporting a one point increase and the lowest annual rate of year-on-year deterioration since February at 32 percent.
November saw the second consecutive month of increases in the number of online job offerings throughout Europe. This follows on from the October Index, which had the number of online job openings up for the first time since February.
Monster says this increase was driven by demand for workers in the arts, entertainment, sports and leisure sector, as well as in the PR and media sector. However, job opportunities fell in accountancy and in the hospitality and tourism category.
“Despite a first quarterly expansion in GDP since early 2008, online recruitment demand across Europe remains deflated. Businesses seem cautious about hiring, waiting for real product and service demand improvements before significantly increasing their staffing levels,” commented Hugo Sellert, head of economic research at Monster Worldwide.
“However, the Index has remained fairly stable over the past four months, which suggests the decline in job vacancies has reached a bottom, a positive development as we move into 2010,” Sellert added. “Growth trends are already being seen in Sweden and the UK, and other countries may soon follow suit.”
Monster says its Index measures millions of online job opportunities from a large, representative selection of corporate career websites and job boards across Europe.
Monster’s latest US Index showed a one point decline in the number of online vacancies, however The Conference Board’s figures had job openings up by 106,500 positions.
