The State of Michigan is not an easy place to find employment – there are currently over 10 unemployed people for every online advertised vacancy, according to recent figures from The Conference Board. But one website has been launched this year with the aim of placing Michigan graduates in jobs and stemming the flow of students who move away to find work.

interninmichigan.com was launched in April and says it wants to place 25,000 Michigan college students in Michigan-based internships over five years. The website has a number of key partners including the Detroit Regional Chamber, West Michigan Strategic Alliance, Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan, and Mid-Michigan Innovation Team.

Free for both employers and job seekers, the website says it replaces the previous “cumbersome and time-consuming” system Michigan students used to find internships.

Last month, interinmichigan.com was awarded a US$1.2 million grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, which will fund the website until 2012. Michigan news website mlive.com reports that more than 4,400 students and 450 employers have now registered on the website.

A number of these employers told freep.com about their positive experiences hiring through interinmichigan.com. “I had three really good candidates. Everybody who came to me was qualified to do what I needed to do,” said surgery centre administrator Linda Phillips. “It was a very positive experience for an administrator who doesn’t have time to interview 35 people to find out that one good one.”
