workthing.com Relaunches, Sparking Debate

Launched in early June, workthing+ is a new version of UK jobs website workthing.com that offers to refund users’ subscription fees if they are unsuccessful in finding work after six months.

The website was created by Trinity Mirror Digital Recruitment, and offers a job search as well as career advice and professional services. Trinity Mirror, which runs a number of job websites, claims to have over 3.7 million registered candidates and receive over 1.8 million visits, 3.3 million searches and 446,000 applications a month.

A generally positive review on Digital Recruiting discussed workthing.com’s evolution:

“workthing.com started off all those years ago as a site that was intended to be an online careers advisory service first and a job board second. Over the years that got diluted as whoever owned it went for the mainstream ‘job board business model’ – how wonderfully retro for workthing+ to have effectively come full circle with TMDR, all be it with a changed business model that better reflects how the Internet has evolved over that time.”

The website’s model of charging users for access has sparked debate, for example on this recruitingfuture.com blog post.

Trinity Mirror’s director of product and digital development, Gareth Lloyd, responded to skeptical comments about the business model on cheezhead.com’s report on the website by saying:

“Tough job markets mean candidates have to do even more to stand out from the crowd. We aren’t selling snake oil or magic wands, just tools to help serious jobseekers. These tools have a track record of success – they have been used by over 100,000 senior executives on corporate outplacement packages.”

I like the idea of workthing+ but found the site itself slightly confusing and the fact that I have to pay proir to getting any benefit from the service meant that I haven’t joined. Indeed a friend suggested http://zookel.com as an alternative. The site’s clear & simple to use and it’s free. I’ve joined and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
