Job Seeker Support at joblessjoe.com
May 7, 2009 by Alice Allan

joblessjoe.com, an online community run by Austin jobseeker Zack Metzner, is one of a number of websites aimed at the growing community of unemployed people in the US.
The website was established in March this year, and aims to enable unemployed people “to connect and keep busy in a positive and productive way and to keep up a network with those in a similar situation”.
joblessjoe.com presents advice on being unemployed, saving money, and of course job hunting. The Rate My Resume feature allows members to receive feedback on their resume from other jobseekers along with a star rating. The Community section includes stories from members, polls, and the opportunity to connect with members in similar industries. The forum covers topics such as maintaining physical and mental health while unemployed, companies that are currently hiring, and job hunting tips.
Contributors earn Joe Points each time they add to the site with comments, articles or questions. These currently determine the most active joblessjoe.com user, but the website suggests that in future these may be used to give members access to promotions.
Metzner told jobsportalwatch.com that the response to the website has been positive so far, with members appreciating its resources and one commending “the positive spirit of the site”. Metzner is leaving the possibility of generating income from the website open, but maintains that, at the moment, it is “purely a goodwill effort”.
Metzner also points out that maintaining the website complements his own job hunting, explaining: “The only way to keep JoblessJoe up to date is to read as much as possible about the latest job finding methods and techniques so I can provide this information to JoblessJoe members.”
According to Metzner, the website has almost reached the milestone of 100 members after recent exposure in the local press. “If JoblessJoe can help just a few unemployed people, then it’s a worthwhile effort,” he says.
As to whether joblessjoe.com will continue once Metzner finds paid work, he says: “At this point, JoblessJoe has become a personal passion. So it’s definitely something I will continue to maintain regardless of my employment situation.”
